UncovAI Joins Provenancefortrust to Strengthen Digital Content Provenance
UncovAI is now part of Provenancefortrust, a French initiative backed by the Ministère de la Culture. The goal: build a real chain of trust for digital content, from the moment it's created to the moment it reaches an audience.
Why Digital Content Provenance Matters
The information ecosystem is under more pressure than it's ever faced. AI-generated content now looks convincing enough that telling true from false has become a genuine skill, not a given. Detection tools help, but none of them are perfect, and moderation at scale rarely has the nuance a single piece of content deserves.
Volume is the real problem. Synthetic media is being produced faster than any team, human or automated, can verify it. Traditional fact-checking wasn't built for this scale, and neither was manual moderation. Our own work on image detection and video detection exists precisely because catching a fake after it spreads is already too late.
Provenance flips the problem. Instead of asking "is this fake," it asks "where did this come from, and can that be proven." That question is answerable at the source, before content ever reaches a reader, a viewer, or a newsroom.
Our Response: Provenancefortrust
UncovAI is building this initiative alongside TrustMyContent, the Journalism Trust Initiative run by Reporters Without Borders, CEPIC, L'Atelier, and the medialab at Sciences Po. Together, this is the first large-scale program focused specifically on authenticity and content provenance for media and the press.
Each partner brings something the others don't have alone. Standards bodies, journalism advocacy groups, image and content licensing experts, and technical detection providers rarely sit at the same table. Provenancefortrust puts them there.
Six Challenges the Initiative Addresses
The program is organized around six problems that, left unsolved, keep eroding trust in digital media:
Authenticity
Creating an end-to-end chain of trust for digital content, from creation to distribution.
Copyright
Reinforcing provenance data to protect creators' rights over their own work.
Certification & Labelling
Promoting transparent standards, including RSF's Journalism Trust Initiative.
AI Transparency
Clearly signaling AI-generated content, in line with the EU AI Act. It's the same principle behind our AI scam and deepfake detector: flag manipulation before it does damage.
Typosquatting
Defending publishers and creators against identity and content hijacking.
Anti-scraping
Protecting original content from misuse by AI-driven scraping platforms.
Trust Has to Start at the Source
Detection catches what's already out there. Provenance stops the guesswork before it starts. That's the shift Provenancefortrust is pushing for, and UncovAI is glad to be part of building it.
