Someone cloned Secretary of State Marco Rubio's voice with AI and used it to contact foreign officials over Signal. It wasn't a prank. It was an attempt to manipulate diplomatic decisions with a voice that never actually spoke.
What Happened
According to a BBC report, an imposter used AI voice cloning to impersonate Rubio and reached out to foreign officials through Signal, the encrypted messaging app. The voicemails were convincing enough to raise real concern inside the State Department. This is CEO fraud, just aimed at a head of diplomacy instead of a company.
The mechanics are identical either way: clone a recognizable voice, use a channel people trust, and count on urgency to override scrutiny. It worked well enough to make headlines. It works just as well against a finance team.
If They Can Clone a Secretary of State, They Can Clone Your CFO
Scale is the part people miss. This wasn't a targeted, expensive operation reserved for nation-state actors.
